Next Irrigator - Smart IoT Plant Irrigation System

Open source

An IoT-based smart irrigation system that allows users to remotely monitor and water plants from anywhere in the world, integrating real-time data tracking with Next.js and Firebase.

Next Irrigator is a modern IoT-powered plant irrigation system that ensures your plants never go without water, even when you are away from home. Built with Next.js, Firebase Realtime Database, and IoT hardware such as NodeMCU, Soil Moisture Sensors, and Water Level Sensors, this project demonstrates a seamless integration of hardware and software to solve a very common household problem.

Project Overview

Taking care of plants is a joy, but when you travel or stay away from home, watering them becomes a challenge. Next Irrigator solves this by letting you control and monitor plant irrigation remotely. From any part of the world, you can water your plants, track soil moisture, monitor water usage, and receive real-time updates on plant needs. The system provides an intuitive dashboard with smart automation to ensure plant health and sustainability.

Key Features

  • Remote Plant Watering: Control irrigation from anywhere using the web app.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: Track soil moisture levels, water usage, and irrigation time.
  • Smart Automation: System decides whether plants need water based on soil moisture data.
  • IoT Hardware Integration: Uses NodeMCU, soil moisture sensor, and water level sensor.
  • Firebase Realtime Database: Stores live sensor data and syncs instantly with the app.
  • Google OAuth Authentication: Secure login system with Google Sign-in.
  • Responsive Dashboard: Manage irrigation from mobile, tablet, or desktop.
  • Data Visualization: Real-time charts and logs for water usage and soil conditions.

Technologies & Tools

  • Next.js & TypeScript: Modern front-end framework with server-side rendering.
  • Tailwind CSS / Shadcn UI: Responsive and clean UI design.
  • Firebase Realtime Database: Live sync between IoT devices and web app.
  • NodeMCU (ESP8266): IoT microcontroller to control irrigation hardware.
  • Soil Moisture Sensor & Water Level Sensor: Hardware for accurate tracking.
  • Google OAuth: Secure authentication system.
  • Chart.js / Recharts: Data visualization for sensor readings.

Challenges Solved

  • Solves the problem of unattended plant care during travel.
  • Real-time communication between IoT hardware and frontend.
  • Automated irrigation based on soil moisture data.
  • Secure authentication using Google OAuth.
  • Scalable system that can be deployed for both home and small-scale farming.
  • Simple and user-friendly dashboard with live data visualization.

Note: This project is a personal IoT prototype developed by Rafe Uddaraj. The hardware setup includes NodeMCU, soil moisture sensors, and water level sensors integrated with Firebase.
